Some Things to Know if You're New or Not in the Fandom

Hen & Karen:

  • Hen decides to go to med school (in S3) and attends in S4-S6 while also working her job at the 118, but she decides not to finish it after completing two years of the program because she doesn’t want to leave the 118 or stop being a foster parent.

  • Hen and Karen are foster parents!

  • Denny: He has and always will be there. <3 He is Hen & Karen’s kid that they adopted. His birth parents are Hen’s ex Eva and Nathaniel, who met in rehab.

  • In S3, Hen and Karen decide to become foster parents

  • Nia: Hen & Karen fostered her in S3-S4, then she goes back to her birth mother. Lots of heartbreak involved.

  • Mara: Hen & Karen start to foster her in S7. Mid S7, she goes to Maddie & Chim due to Plot Reasons™ and then she comes back in the first half of S8, and she’s still with them as of 8x16.

Voice Acting Tips by Character

Athena:

  • Mostly think "lower", so like, pitching your voice lower, placing your voice box lower and it feels like opening up and rounding my throat and palate and pulling from the bottom of my diaphragm. Angela Bassett has a very resonant, rolling voice, so try to match her cadence.

Bobby:

  • Bobby’s voice is authoritative but kind. His voice sits in your chest, and can sometimes feel like it's similar to Eddie's voice. There is a mite of truth to that! But where the difference lies is that Bobby is a little bit deeper in the chest and throat than Eddie, and has different, slightly more rounded vowel sounds.

  • Unless the shit is really hitting the fan, Bobby almost always has a little smile on his face. In season one, he’s way more reserved, but once he admits he can’t help but love the 118, there’s always a bit of a fond-dad edge to his voice.

Brad:

  • Brad is a gruff, over-acted/self- important British man. He uses an American accent for Hotshots.

Buck:

  • Buck’s voice changes slightly over the seasons - of course Oliver has gotten older, but he’s also settled into his American accent a little more.

  • Sometimes, usually when Buck is flustered or unsure, he gets a bit of a stutter. It's a good way to show Buck isn’t feeling super confident in himself or the situation.

  • Buck’s voice sits pretty forward in the mouth. Say his lines with your mouth open wider instead of taller and try to add a little rasp. Buck’s cadence is very distinct — there’s a lot of rising and falling in his sentences, and he talks faster when he’s excited. He also takes breaks in the middle of sentences. (e.g. Just [pause] hear me out; Wait, wait wait [pause] hold on). I would say that a flatter tone and cadence happens when he’s upset and trying to show emotional control or he’s grieving. But other than that, Buck is normally excited and enthusiastic, and it helps if you inject that into your performance!

Chim:

  • Chim’s voice sits at the roof of your mouth, but closer to the front than Hen’s voice. His sounds are wider and less round, and his cadence has a sarcastic lilt to it a lot of the time.

Eddie:

  • Eddie’s voice normally sits far back in the throat and even in your chest. He’s more deliberate than Buck and requires more precision of speaking, less slurring of words. He’s more likely to get more rigid in tone when he’s angry, more forceful. But when Eddie melts, make sure his smile can be heard in your voice! Especially when he’s talking to Chris.

  • Brush up on your Spanish pronunciation! Eddie is very proud of his Mexican heritage, so make sure you know how to pronounce abuela and mijo if you really want to get it right.

Captain Gerrard:

  • Gerrard wants to sounds like a drill sergeant but is just a liiiiiittle whiney and talks through his nose (mustache) when he's upset.

Hen:

  • Hen’s voice is round and warm! It sits at the top of your mouth and all of the sounds get a bit more rounded. Hen knows herself and is herself. Project a quiet confidence and genuine competence when voicing her!

Karen:

  • Karen is a no-nonsense scientist. She isn’t rude, but she also doesn’t suffer idiots. Her voice is more clipped.

Maddie:

  • To really nail those Maddie scenes: it’s all about the eyebrows. Jennifer Love Hewitt's eyebrows deserve their own credit. She cries easily, but is always trying to smile. She’s just a really emotional lady! Don’t be afraid to cry.

Taylor:

  • Taylor talks professionally, so she does not make mistakes. Project, and put on your best news anchor voice.
